Trishna

There are a handful of movie scores that have the power to drift the listener into a vacuum of melancholy, and the score to Trishna is undoubtedly one of them. As a fan of string based scores such as John Williams’ score to Schindler’s List or Wojciech Kilar’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula, I can easily say that Shigeru Umebayashi’s detailed work on this score is almost on a par with those milestones.

Trishna is a classic love story between a rich man and a poor woman who is governed by traditions that limit her, and Umebayashi studies this drama very well, presenting the bipolar nature of dramatic themes as expected: Waltzes give off a happier mood, while there is a certain sadness translated via the cello.

This is definitely a beautiful movie score to keep you company while you are walking around on a rainy day. Highly recommended to those movie score fiends who are willing to confide their hearts to a group of sad strings for an emotionally resonant experience.
